- Impact damage. Vinyl cracks in cold temperatures and from hail, debris, or any point impact. Individual panels can be replaced, but matching old vinyl color is nearly impossible — panels fade at different rates, and a "repaired" vinyl wall is visually obvious.
- Moisture infiltration behind the wall. Vinyl isn't a water barrier — it's a rain screen. If the housewrap and flashing behind it fail (common in vinyl re-sidings where the flashing and housewrap weren't properly detailed), you can have serious moisture damage behind perfectly-looking vinyl panels for years before anyone notices.

The honest downside: fiber cement carries a real upfront premium over vinyl, and the installation is more labor-intensive — Hardie requires fiber cement cutting tools and specific fastening patterns, which means more hours on the wall. Done correctly by a trained installer, it will outlast vinyl by 10–15 years on a Long Island home. The honest maintenance requirement on Long Island: cedar must be repainted or re-stained every 5–7 years on the South Shore (more often in spray-zone coastal locations), inspected annually for soft spots and failing paint, and monitored for insect activity. When maintenance is kept up, a cedar-sided home is beautiful indefinitely. When it's deferred — which is common — you quickly develop rot, failed caulk joints, and moisture infiltration that's expensive to remediate.
