- Wood siding (cedar clapboard or shingles): the most expensive to install and the only one with a recurring maintenance obligation — regular painting or staining every 5–8 years in Long Island's climate. Wood is beautiful, but most homeowners who've lived with it for a generation choose vinyl or fiber cement when it's time to replace.
What actually drives the number on your siding quote.
There's no honest way to price siding from a website, because two houses of the same square footage can land far apart. The variables that move a siding quote the most are:
- Wall area and stories. Two- and three-story elevations need staging or lift access, which changes the labor picture more than the extra square footage alone does.
- Material and profile. Vinyl, insulated vinyl, fiber cement, and cedar are four different jobs, not four price tiers of the same job.
- Condition of what's underneath. Sound sheathing is a straightforward tear-off and re-clad. Rotted sheathing, failed housewrap, or damaged framing has to be repaired first.

Which material is right for Long Island's climate?
Long Island's position on the East Coast makes moisture management the primary durability variable. Any siding system needs to handle wind-driven rain, temperature cycling, and (for homes near the bay or sound) salt spray. Here's how each material performs across those criteria.
Vinyl is impervious to moisture itself and won't rot — but it can become brittle in cold weather and crack under impact, and it expands and contracts significantly with temperature swings. Homes in Amityville, Copiague, and Lindenhurst near the water do well with thicker-gauge vinyl (0.046"+) that's more dimensionally stable. Vinyl can also warp if installed too tightly without proper expansion gaps — a common installation error we sometimes find when older siding comes off.
Fiber cement is the most durable choice. It won't rot, won't sustain insect damage, won't warp from humidity, and holds paint significantly longer than wood (manufacturer warranties on pre-finished fiber cement run 15 years for color retention). The trade-off is a higher upfront cost and more demanding installation — fiber cement must be cut with specialized tools and installed with proper clearances from grade and trim. Improperly installed fiber cement absorbs water at the cut ends and fails at the butt joints.
The resale case for both materials is strong. New siding is one of the few improvements that changes the entire first impression of a house, and buyers on Long Island read fresh, correctly installed siding as a sign the envelope has been looked after. Between the two, fiber cement tends to hold its finish and its lines longer, while quality vinyl gets you a clean, low-maintenance exterior with less disruption during the install. The best siding material in the world underperforms when it's installed incorrectly. The details that matter most on Long Island — where wind-driven rain is a serious design condition — include proper housewrap or weather-resistive barrier installation (this is the moisture management layer behind the siding), correct flashing at all openings (windows, doors, penetrations), adequate expansion gaps for vinyl, sealed cut ends for fiber cement, and proper paint-to-grade clearance (fiber cement should not touch the ground).
