Re-siding here is two jobs at once: weatherproofing the wall, and finding out what previous owners left on it. Elevations facing the harbor and the open Sound take salt air and wind-driven rain that inland streets do not see, so most of the value in the work sits in what nobody looks at afterward — sheathing exposed and inspected, rotted or missing boards replaced, a properly lapped water-resistive barrier, and flashing detailed at every window head, corner board and material transition. Storms come off the water out of the north and northeast, and they find anything detailed for a calmer exposure.
What comes off is rarely one layer. Original cedar under 1960s aluminum under a later run of vinyl is a routine find, and on postwar houses toward Huntington Station and Greenlawn it can be asbestos-cement shingle, which changes handling, disposal and scope. Underneath, older village houses frequently have gapped board sheathing or none at all — studs, felt and siding — so the wall has to be made continuous before anything new is hung. None of that is visible from the driveway, which is why we walk the house, pull a sample where we can, and state the unknowns before you sign anything.
Fastening matters more near the water than most people expect. Electroplated nails bleed rust streaks down painted trim within a season or two, and the wrong metal set against aluminum or copper flashing starts a galvanic reaction that shows for years, so within sight of the harbor we specify stainless or hot-dipped galvanized. Profile matters as much: cedar clapboard and shingle are the local vernacular, and exposure, corner detail and trim proportion have to suit the era of the house or the elevation reads wrong from the street. We also repair the base-of-wall rot that hillside grade, deep shade and mature oaks quietly produce.
