Those two problems share a ZIP code and almost nothing else. In the older village colonials the units are weighted, single-glazed double-hungs sitting in sash pockets, and the work is replacing them without destroying the interior casing or flattening the sightlines that give the front of the house its proportion. Muntin pattern, sash-to-frame ratio and trim profile all have to be matched. Where the frame is sound an insert preserves the original trim; where water has taken it, a full frame-out is the honest answer, and on a property with a local historic designation that decision goes through review before anything is ordered.
On the harbor and Sound-facing side the priorities invert. Those are large fixed and sliding units chasing a water view, sitting on the most exposed elevation of the property. They need to be specified for coastal wind pressure, fastened into framing rather than relying on a nailing fin, flashed and sealed against rain that arrives close to horizontal, and fitted with hardware that still operates after a decade of salt air. We install several lines for this work, including Andersen, which we are certified to install. Sightlines matter here too, in the other direction: the glass is the point of the room.
Huntington projects regularly turn attic or lower-level space into living space, and on these hillside lots the lower level is often a walkout, which brings egress sizing into the conversation — a bedroom below grade needs a compliant opening, and sometimes a window well cut into a sloped, cobbled bank. Older openings hide their own surprises: rot under the sill where mature oak canopy keeps that wall shaded and damp, jambs that are no longer square, and decades of paint holding the sash in place. We assess each opening on its own rather than order a houseful of units off one measurement.
